7 - What is an Attic Barrier?

from:

During the summer months, it is common for attic temperatures to rise to temperatures well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This can not only cause damage to the wood and insulation in the attic, it can also cause cooling bills to be higher than necessary. Many people are installing an attic barrier in their homes to help control the air temperatures in their attics.

An attic barrier should be constructed from any type substrate material. This material includes, but is not limited to:

cardboard

plywood

plastic

If an attic barrier is constructed with thinner material, like cardboard, fiber reinforcements are commonly added to make the barrier more simple to install. At least one side of the barrier must be covered in some sort of reflective material, for example aluminum foil, in order for the barrier to be effective.

An attic barrier installation project can be simple and inexpensive for a homeowner to complete on his own. For a homeowner who is having his new home constructed, the project an also be simple and inexpensive. However, hiring a contractor to come in and install an attic barrier to an existing home can become expensive. The cost will largely depend upon the design of the home, as well as how difficult it will be to access the attic area.

There are many ways homeowners can install attic barriers in their homes. Which process is best is determined by the size of the attic, as well as whether it is a being done in a new home or a remodeling project. No matter how a homeowner may choose to install an attic barrier, there is one important fact that should always be kept in mind. When installing an attic barrier that only has one reflective side, this side must be facing the top of the home. If the reflective side of the attic barrier is facing down, the barrier will be ineffective.

When installing an attic barrier as a do it yourself project, there are some important factors to keep in mind. When working with an attic barrier, it is important to wear protective gear. Protective gear should include gloves to protect the hands, and goggles or glasses to protect the eyes.

It is also important when installing an attic barrier as a do it yourself project, to be careful to consider where staples are being put. An attic is typically full of all sorts of wiring, and a misplaced staple could potentially cause electrical damage. Electrical problems tend to be costly, and often require the services of a licensed professional.

Finally, to safely install an attic barrier, a work partner is necessary. Not only will having a partner up there to help with the job, and help ensure safety, having company will make the job more pleasant.
