Energy Efficient Lighting
from:Light is a very important factor in our lives. It helps determine how we see, play, and work. It also has an effect on our health, morale, safety, productivity, and comfort. It is important to keep in mind that you can save energy in your home and still keep your lighting quality and the amount of light in your home.
There are many different lighting options that are available to more efficiently light your home. This can save you money and help conserve electricity and save the environment at the same time. Some of these methods are free. There are others that cost some money, but will pay for themselves over time as you save money on your energy costs.
The easiest and free way to more efficiently utilize lighting is with day lighting. This means that you use windows and skylights to allow sunlight to come into your home. With the increased energy-efficiency of windows and many new developments in lighting designs, you can effectively use windows and reduce the necessity of artificial lighting in your home during the day. You will not cause heating or cooling conflicts if you correctly utilize day lighting.
When considering how to best use day lighting in your home, you first need to take into account your climate and the design of your home. If you are designing your home, it is important to make sure that windows are located based on direction rather than how they affect the appearance of the house from the street. Keep in mind that south-facing windows are the best when pursuing day lighting or when working on keeping seasonal temperatures moderated. South-facing windows let the best amount of sunlight into your home in the winter and also keep direct sunlight out of your home in the summer. This is especially true if you have installed proper shades over the windows. Also remember that windows that face the east and west may provide good daylight in the morning and evening, but these windows should be limited. They can cause glares, let in a large amount of heat in the summer and make things much hotter, and they do not help much with solar heating in the wintertime.
Another lighting source that has a lot to do with energy costs and efficiency is artificial lighting. Nearly 15% of all energy use in a household is consumed by artificial lighting. With new lighting technologies that have been created, you can reduce your home energy usage by 50-75%. There are several ways to reduce your lighting costs and usage. You can purchase compact fluorescent lights. These light bulbs cost a little bit more in the beginning, but can save you around $30.00 or more in energy costs for each light bulb that you replace with a compact fluorescent bulb. These bulbs last 10 times longer than regular light bulbs and produce approximately 75% less heat than a regular light bulb. This can drastically reduce your cooling costs in the summer. So, you pay a little extra for a bulb, but it lasts significantly longer and helps save you money on your electric expenses. You can also buy timers for your lights that turn them on when they are needed and automatically turn them off when they are not needed. This can save you a lot of money and you no longer have to worry about constantly reminding your family to turn the lights off when they leave a room.
These simple steps can save you a great deal of money on your energy bills. They can also go a long way towards conserving electricity and saving the environment. For more information on lighting and energy consumption, you can find information on the internet or contact your local energy company. They can give you more advice and tips to help you make your home more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
