Garage Insulation Increases Usefulness
from:Garages are no longer just a place to collect clutter or park the car. Today, people are finding new uses for their garages and home improvement projects for garage renovation are endless. If you have a garage and aren’t sure what you can do to improve the space, then you’re in for a surprise and you’ll have hours of enjoyment creating an organized, well-kept garage “room”.
Since people are using garages more than ever before, it’s time to think about ways to make the garage for comfortable and friendly. Your garage may be an extension of your house or it may be a stand-alone building on your property. Either way, you can gain a lot of benefits from insulating your garage. It doesn’t matter if you live in Minnesota where temperatures dip below zero or Florida where heat soars above 100 degrees, insulation is a smart thing to do.
Insulation is a barrier for hot or cold weather. It makes a garage more comfortable and it makes it possible to use the garage for different purposes year-round. Maybe you want to use it for a gameroom, a hobby nook, or a place to organize household items. It is very likely that your garage is insulated where walls and ceilings are shared with the interior of your house since building codes require this level of insulation. But those other surfaces that aren’t common to your main house could be allowing cold or heat to enter and escape unknowingly.
Part One: Inexpensive and simple ways to insulate your garage.
There are some inexpensive and simple ways to insulate your garage. It’s a great do-it-yourself project and it can be managed on a weekend day. Keep these tips in mind as you think about insulating your garage:
1. Fiberglass insulation is easy to install and only requires the use of a staple gun and some good work gloves. You simply attach the fiberglass batt insulation between the studs of the walls, ensuring that the paper side of the insulation is facing into the garage. Later, you can dry wall the garage to add even more opportunity to organize your garage and make it more useful.
2. If your walls are already dry walled or covered and you’re not sure if they’re insulated, it pays to find out. You may need to make a small hole in the sheetrock or other covering to find out what’s behind it. Find a spot in a corner or behind a cabinet where the hole won’t be noticed. Beware of any electrical lines or wires that may be lurking before you attempt to remove a small piece of wall and proceed cautiously. Once you can see behind the dry wall, you’ll know if insulation is there. If it’s not, you have options.
3. Insulation can be sprayed between the stud walls. This type of foaming insulation moves down the wall from the ceiling and expands to fill in the space – creating a barrier between weather elements and your garage. Foam insulation can be a little costly, but it is well worth the time and money. It is also possible to spray fiberglass insulation between stud walls too. Check on local resources and pricing to find out which is best for your area.
