4. Create your plans with lighting in mind. Natural light is always preferred so adding windows and skylights should be a major consideration. You can always include track lighting to help brighten up the garage area.
5. When calculating the cost of your garage addition, you need to consider the cost of framing, carpentry, insulation, windows, doors, plumbing or heating, electricity, exterior siding, building permit costs, and related costs.
6. Make sure the design and architecture of your new addition fits in well with the rest of your house. Using the same shingles, exterior siding, trim, and other features will make it appear as if it were always a part of the house. Matching your garage to your house is essential. This includes tying into the existing roofline and using a similar pitch roof.
7. Think about the door opening. Some people want a garage that faces the street while others prefer a door in the back. Garages with entryway in the back look like an extension of the house from the front and may be more appealing. It also depends on the space you have available and the layout of your property.
8. You can always have your own plans created and designed or you can purchase garage plans to meet your needs. Purchasing garage plans usually includes blueprints, list of building materials, checklist for fees (building permits) and information on how to get started. Plans range from as little as $20 to as much as $500. You can also purchase do-it-yourself garage manuals and planning guides at home improvement stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot.
9. Remember that your planning should include consideration for any necessary demolition, excavation, site preparation, foundation work, and general building requirements. These costs should be incorporated into your budget.
Whether you’re undertaking this extensive home improvement project yourself or if you’re hiring a contractor, be sure to do your homework. If you’re using a contractor, get more than one estimate and clarify what is included in each quote you receive. Don’t leave any open questions. Also, be sure any contractors you consider are experienced, bonded, and insured in the state in which you reside and are building your garage.
Take time to plan the perfect garage before you make any other steps. Designing a garage that will be functional useful for years to come takes planning and evaluation. Once you have your new garage addition, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your expanded house.
