13. Understanding Landscaping

from:

Landscaping is something that can consume a lot of energy, time, and money. It’s not something you do on the spur of the moment. It takes a lot of preparation. If money is not a concern, you may want to consider hiring a professional landscaper to come in and makeover your property. If money is a concern, which it is for most homeowners, you will need to know exactly what you’re doing before you do anything to your landscape.

Most homeowners have an idea in their minds about how they want their landscapes to look. Some people prefer an elegantly manicured landscape; others prefer a more natural landscape. Whatever your want, it’s a good idea to draw out your landscaping plan on paper. You should keep in mind that landscaping should complement the home itself and the personality of the homeowners.

If you’re at a total loss as to what you want your landscape to look like, you can easily get ideas from magazines, books, or by searching out pictures online. Here is a rundown of a few types of landscaping styles to get your thoughts moving in the right direction:

Formal Landscapes – This type of landscape is about lines and shapes. Most formal landscapes will have a lot of straight lines and geometrical shapes. Plants, trees, and shrubs will be planted in an orderly manner and not randomly placed. Formal landscapes are generally close in arrangement and require consistent pruning to maintain the lines and shapes.

Informal Landscapes – This type of landscape generally doesn’t have straight lines or a detailed, organized arrangement of plants, trees, and shrubs. This type of landscape is cozy to look at and generally have a lot of curves.

Oriental – This type of landscape emphasizes the use of water, rocks, evergreens, and plants to create stylish angles and a bit of mystery.

Drawing out your landscaping plan is a good idea. It will give you a good idea of the amount of time, energy, and money that you will need to invest in the project. It will also enable you to see that creating your landscape will not be something that you will be able to do overnight. This will give you the insight to see what should be done and in what order. Most homeowners will begin by focusing on the areas that they will spend the most time, or areas that are ‘seen’ from the street first. Whichever area you choose to start with is completely personal.

Don’t let the landscaping process intimidate you and remember that there really are no definite rules to landscaping. Your landscape can be whatever you want it to be. Once you are see your landscaping sketch come to life on your property you’ll feel like a true artist and have a deep sense of satisfaction.
