On a Budget? Consider Used Building Materials

from:

Largely due to those who work to protect the environment, there is a great supply of used building materials all across the United States. This can mean big savings for those who are renovating their homes on a budget. It truly is amazing when you consider that thousands and thousands of tons of building materials end up in landfills each year, many of them still fit for years of usage. You’ll need to know exactly what it is you’re getting; not all building materials are created equally but much of the time you can find exactly what it is you need in near new condition.

Check with Local Contractors

Whether you are remodeling one room or your entire home, check with local contractors to see what they do with their leftovers. After all, someone has to dispose of leftover product as well as materials that have come out of the home or business being renovated. While no contractor is going to part with a truckload of new product, there are often leftover materials that have been cut, such as leftover carpet, wood, and a variety of other materials. See who might be willing to let you have their scraps before they hit the landfill. You may just hit the jackpot!

Search Online

There are several organizations, some not for profit, and some for profit, that recycle used building materials to sell to local communities. A quick online search will let you know if there is such an organization, warehouse, or store in your area. Also, check the yellow pages in case the local store doesn’t have a website as yet. Offerings range from a single piece of glass, drywall, or paneling to an entire roomful of building materials. Savings are often as much as 50% of what you would pay new so it pays to shop around.

Be Patient

It may take some time and a bit of looking to find just the used building materials you are looking for so if you are involved in a rush project, this strategy may not work for you. However, if you have the time or are able to plan months ahead of time you may find the perfect used building materials for your home improvement project. You might even get lucky and find new building materials at a fraction of the cost when you shop at some of the recycling organizations as much of their donations come from surplus supplies at local home improvement stores and from local contractors who have more than they need and who may be able to take a tax deduction for their donation. In any event, patience and persistence can pay off big if you are able to find what you need at a fraction of the cost.
