Warming-Up Patios and Decks

from:

Patios and decks are incredibly relaxing outdoor spaces in warm, pleasant weather. They make a great place for entertaining, grilling, and relaxing in spring and summer. But they do have their limitations when it comes to cool autumn days and nights, or wintry cold afternoons.

Instead of viewing your deck or patio simply as a resort in perfect weather, consider turning up the heat. There are outdoor home improvements that pay off big and adding a heat source to your outdoor “rooms” makes them more useful year-round. It also adds to the beauty and ambience of the space.

Patio and deck heat sources don’t have to be elaborate and expensive to be enjoyable. They simply have to be well planned and safely installed. You’ll soon enjoy toasting s’mores on cold, crisp fall evenings and grilling steaks on icy, cold winter evenings. It just takes a little careful shopping to get started.

When considering a heating source for your outdoor “room”, take a look at some of these ideas to get you started:

1. Patio heaters are an excellent choice if time and money is limited. You can purchase a patio heater that will bring warmth to a small or large area. Try to enclose the area as much as possible, ensuring safety of locating furniture, plants, and other things near the heat source. Screens, movable walls, lattice dividers, and other types of structures included around the perimeter of the space will help keep the heat in and the cold out.

2. Chimineas are another great idea for patios. They come in cast iron and cast aluminum and are easily installed on your patio. They add character to your outdoor space and can be easily moved around the patio if you decide to relocate them based on weather conditions. Chimineas don’t require any special wiring or installation processes so you can get them set-up and useful quickly.

3. Outdoor fire pits have become extremely popular and they come in all shapes and sizes. You can find them built into patio tables or as stand-alone structures. Outdoor fire pits are simple to handle and can be placed anywhere on your patio. A fire pit is like having an open fireplace on your patio without the expense.

4. Outdoor fireplaces are a little more expensive and complex to build on your patio, but they are well worth the time and money. Outdoor fireplaces really turn the space into a cozy “room” and offer lots of warmth and added beauty. They are very inviting and can be used for warmth and cooking. As a focal point, they’re inviting to friends and family any time of the year.

5. Heated patio pavers are another great option to warm up your outdoor space. Just like heated driveway pavers, they keep ice and snow from building up on your patio. They can also be used to warm the floor for guests and keep their toes warm and cozy while sipping hot chocolate by the fireplace or patio heater. They can even warm up a patio alone because the heat rises slowly.

Warming up your patio or deck inspires you to take advantage of outdoor living in all kinds of weather. The entertainment doesn’t stop when the sun goes down or when the clocks fall back in the autumn. And winter holidays are a lot more fun when enjoyed in the warmth of your outdoor “room”. Throw some outdoor pillows and cushions on the patio, toss out some comfy stadium blankets, and enjoy the outdoors year-round.

It’s a home improvement investment that you and your guests will enjoy for years to come.
