Plumbing Equipment Explained
from:Plumbing problems can be extraordinarily expensive, but most people don’t take the time to try and learn about their plumbing system until it is too late. Not having a basic understanding of the plumbing in your home can cost you in a few different ways. You may have to pay a plumber for a job that might be easily done yourself. You may overpay a plumber because you don’t understand the job they need to do and how much the parts should cost. Further, you may end up trying to make a quick fix yourself that ends up doing extensive damage to your plumbing system. As a homeowner, you owe it to yourself to have some basic knowledge of plumbing equipment. Here is everything you need to know to make informed decisions when you have a plumbing meltdown.
One of the most important parts of your plumbing system is the pump. Many of the problems people have with their plumbing can be traced back to the pump. These relatively simply devices do exactly what you might imagine they do – they pump water or gas into your plumbing system and pump waste back out. When your toilet won’t stop running or won’t flush, chances are that your pump needs to be adjusted or replaced. Pump repair is usually relatively easy and inexpensive – most jobs can be done without the help of a professional plumber.
Along with the pump, the pipes are one of the most crucial parts of your plumbing system. The pipes are the conduits through which the liquid or gas the pumps are forcing in or out travel. Originally, most plumbing pipes were made of lead, but these days, strong plastics, other metals, and even bamboo are used. Pipes are also the cause of many plumbing woes. Burst pipes can happen in cold weather and cause significant damage to your property. Pipe repair should only be handled by someone who understands the system.
There are filters and heating systems that help maintain your system, but the other pieces of equipment of most interest to homeowners are the fixtures. Everything from your toilet to your taps falls into the category of fixtures. Fixture repairs are often reasonably easy to tackle without the help of a professional. Most of the work that is done on fixtures is done so for cosmetic reasons – replacing outdated fixtures or changing styles because of personal preferences. Broken fixtures, unless they are attached directly to the pipes, can be repaired with ease.
The internet has a wealth of information about plumbing systems, including information about particular brands. This makes it easy for you to research your system before you call in a professional, so you can control the cost of repair – always a priority with expensive plumbing repairs.
