Replacing Old Plumbing – When Do Your Old Pipes Need to Go?
from:Plumbing is usually relatively sturdy, but it does not last forever. If you find yourself making small repairs over and over again, it may mean that your plumbing system needs to be replaced. Of course, replacing plumbing is no small undertaking. The construction work that goes into such a job is not only disruptive – you may have to leave your home as walls are torn out and your water is disconnected - but it is also hugely expensive. So, how do you decide when repair jobs are enough and when it is time to bite the bullet and actually go for replacing your entire plumbing system? Here are the things you need to consider when making this incredibly important decision.
When it comes to plumbing repairs versus plumbing replacement, the trick is to find the balance between not jumping into a replacement job before you to but getting the work done before any big disasters happen. If you have a massive system failure, not only will you have to pay to have the plumbing replacement work done, but you will also have to pay to repair any damage done to your property by the failure. One way to tell that you have a big plumbing problem on your hands is the number of times you need a repair done. As important as the frequency of plumbing problems is the location of the issues. If you have to continually make repairs in the same area, then you can be certain that the repairs are not doing the trick and that more extensive work needs to be done.
Another way to know that you have a problem in your plumbing system is to just listen to your pipes. When you turn on a tap or flush a toilet, do you hear lots of banging? Does the system just sound like it is struggling to cope? Often, when you hear that kind of disruption, it is because the system is indeed struggling to work. Some creaking is normal, but when your system is fragile, you will know it. If you couple that with something like there being a delay between when you turn on your tap and when the water comes out, you should definitely consider having your plumbing professionally checked.
Time can be another indicator. Plumbing has a shelf life. In apartments, pipes need to be replaced every 30 years or so. Private homes may be able to get away with another 10 years so depending on usage. If your plumbing is this old, it may simply be time.
When it comes time to replace your plumbing, make sure to shop around and get a few prices for the job. The work is expensive, so getting the best deal makes sense.
