2. Basics Of Swimming Pool Safety

from:

Whether you have an indoor or an outdoor private swimming pool, you need to make sure that there are enough safety measures enforced. Swimming pool safety measures are necessary especially when there are kids around or people who do not know how to swim. According to statistics, drowning is the second most common cause of death among children: they either are allowed to play in the pool without being properly supervised, or they have an accident that results in drowning. In any case, every residential pool should abide by safety measures and rules.

When it comes to safety, the most important thing you need to ensure is that the pool is not reachable by small kids when there are no adults around. Placing a tall enough fence is a good idea, to start with. The fence should be placed around the swimming pool and have a locked gate. Children absolutely adore water and think it’s a fun place to play, therefore they might easily fall into the pool and hit themselves or drown if not supervised. Experts suggest that many accidents and deaths wouldn’t have occurred if the kids didn’t have access to a pool. If you have an indoor pool, make sure that you lock the room or prevent access in some way.

During summer, when most residential pools are open, you should keep enough of functional safety equipment around. Although sometimes this equipment might not be enough, it can definitely help in a case of emergency. Waist belts, floating objects and life jackets should be close by. Never allow a small kid to swim by itself. Although it is not possible always, keeping a children’s area where the water is shallow is also a good idea.

If your pool is open, make sure that there are people present who know to swim. Do not allow any of your friends to swim if they do not know how to and definitely do not allow anyone to swim when tipsy or drunk. Swimming is supposed to be a fun and exciting exercise and activity, not a fatal or deadly experience.

If you have kids try to cultivate a respect for water; do not make them be afraid of it, but rather understand the dangers and potential hazards associated with simple games in the water.

Always keep in mind that you cannot get too much safety; when it comes to saving other people’s lives, there is no such thing as too much. Even if some people think that you are overreacting, try to ignore these kinds of comments and focus on what you think is the best. It’s better to be safe than sorry, especially when there are kids and family members involved.

An IoS guide to A-road Britain (Part 1)

When I think of a long journey by road my mind still goes back, despite all the trips across country with my wife and sons, to my father and the holiday drive to the West Country circa 1962. Only a mildly travelled man overseas (thanks, in approximate order, to Adolf Hitler, the British Army, and Erwin Rommel), he was, because of his job, a vastly experienced driver all over southern England.
