8. Ensuring Safe Swimming Pools For Children
from:According to studies one of the most common causes of death in children today is by drowning in swimming pools. These unfortunate events can take place within seconds, completely unintentionally. The majority of those cases are associated with lapses in supervision of the kids close to crowded swimming pools. Most of the times, the children that drown in pools are close to their parents, but due to noise or loss of sight temporarily they go completely unnoticed. Therefore creating safe swimming pools for children is mandatory. The significance of safety techniques and measures is proven by the immense number of misfortunes.
There are numerous private swimming pools today in houses and resorts. People who own residential pools should be aware of the seriousness of the problem. Here are some basic precaution measures that should be taken while building private swimming pools where kids are around:
The most common and needed safety precaution measure is the installation and establishment of fences around the pool. The fence should be three to four feet tall, in order to reduce the chances of an accident that might result in drowning. The fence should have a gate, prohibiting kids to enter unsupervised and should be dense enough so as to eliminate the chance of squeezing through.
Some residential swimming pools are indoor pools. These pools should feature covers for the period of time that they are not used. There should also be alarms and door locks, which are unreachable to kids.
Power safety covers placed over the pools should be used as well. There are particular standards for the covers, introduced by ASTM. The cover should withstand the weight of at least two adults who fall onto it.
If you stay by the pool with your kids, you should always have some flotation devices around. This doesn’t mean that you don’t need to pay attention and supervise your kids; it’s a precautionary measure in the case of an accident.
If you go to a swimming pool or use your private pool make sure that kids are always supervised by an adult – if you have babysitters or other employees in the house you should teach them how to properly take care of kids when swimming.
No matter what precautions you take, an accident might still occur. Therefore it is necessary to remember that the only thing that can make a true difference is to teach your kids how to behave around pools. If your children are old enough to understand and acknowledge the potential dangers, you can maybe teach them how to protect themselves. If your kids are small, you should tighten the safety measures and supervise them at all times.
