Home Security for the Outside of Your Home
from:Don’t neglect home security issues on the outside of your home when you are planning how best to keep your family safe. All too often, the same people who spend hundreds of dollars on a home security system neglect the simple things outside the home that can serve to protect their home and family.
Garages and Sheds
Be sure and keep your garage and shed locked as well as any interior doors that lead from the garage to your home. Also, keep all ladders and tools safely locked up in the garage or shed as this can be an open invitation to thieves. If you store items of value in your garage, don’t leave the garage door up any longer than necessary, even when you are home. The same thieves that break car windows to steal packages will break your garage door to lift items of value they see on a daily basis.
Keys
There was a time when it seemed relatively safe to hide a key under a planter or mat but those days are gone. Don’t delude yourself into thinking you can hide your house key so well that thieves won’t find it because believe me, they know all the hiding places. Just make sure all family members have their own key and keep your doors locked at all times.
Trees and Bushes
While it’s fun to get creative with shrubbery, think security before design. Keep bushes well trimmed so as not to provide thieves with hiding places. In addition, make sure any bushes that are near windows are the thorny kind, which will also discourage burglars. As far as trees, keep any branches trimmed that are near windows as you don’t want to provide would be burglars easy access to upstairs windows, ledges, or balconies.
As nice as it is to have privacy from neighbors, you want your neighbors to be able to see any signs of someone trying to break into your home so remember this when you are designing your landscaping. Think about what passing cars may be able to see as well. Intruders don’t want an audience so they will purposely look for homes that are obscured from the road, perhaps by a row of trees.
Outside Lighting
Consider installing outside lighting to discourage intruders. If you like, you can get the kind of lights with motion sensors so they only come on when motion is detected. Place these lights near walkways and also near entrances. By using this type of outdoor lighting, your costs will be minimal because you won’t use that much energy as the lights only come on when needed yet your invited guests will be able to see where they are going and any uninvited guests will be discouraged from hanging around. Utilizing smart exterior home security measures like these will help to ensure your family’s safety.
